A few years ago I applied for 2 credit cards and a loan, I was given more than I could pay back, and I was too busy enjoying myself to realise...bad bad idea.

I have about £7700 worth of debt across 4 credit cards, I have heard that it is possible to request settlement figures of around 20% of the balance, how likely is this?
Most of this debt was actually my ex boyfriend who although has not left me with these debts has £15K of his own and just been made redundant so is unable to repay them.

Ive heard that it is law that if you do not pay off any amount towards a debt:?

For instance if you had 10.000 pounds on a credit card and you left the country and went to spain for at least 6 yrs without paying a penny towards the debt then 'by law' the debt is void?
However if you had a civil service pension, could the bank get a court order or something...and take money from your monthly pension?

A little help needed.
My mother in law owns her own house leashold, which is currently being repossessed due to a 3k debt not being paid. (Building insurance owed to leasholder- which she claims she was paying through her bank and that her late husband sorted it out, bank apparently confirm this but company says she hasn't and owes this £3k)
