Smoby is the biggest manufacturer of toys in France and the second in Europe. Indeed, the first one is Mattel, an American company. The society was created in 1924. They have made business for 84 years. The headquarters are established in France, in the Jura. It's a family company.
Smoby employs 1250 people in France and 2750 people worldwide mainly in China. They have subsidiaries in several European countries: two in Spain and one in Romania. They manufacture traditional toys, electronic toys and multimedia.
The company was set up by Moquin Breuil now Ms Dany Breuil has become the senior executive of Smoby. At the beginning, Ms Breuil sold wooden educationnal stationary and kitchen ustensil. But 30 years later, (so then in 1950), they start a range of plastic toys.
Smoby merged successively with six small companies: lardy, Monneret, "Pico and Ecoiffier", Majorette, and Solido.
On March 2007, his turnover amounted to 349 millions of euro.
Nowadays, Smoby is crippled with debt. They owe 300 million euros. The company is divided into four parts: Smoby Maxi, Smoby Imitation, Smoby Activity, Smoby Players.
Although Smoby was a profitable company who made big profits, it goes to bankrupt.
They will reduce their workforce by two because of a fierce competition of Asian countries like China and Singapore. Smoby has actually a great sense of humanism, contrary to other big companies. Two thirds of the Smoby's toys are manufactured in Europe. Most of the others enterprises don't (appliquer) a correct code of ethics to their foreign employees.
